N.Y. Drops Citizenship Proof For Driver's Licenses

(CBS) NEW YORK They were celebrating outside the governor's office Friday as Eliot Spitzer handed a landmark victory to a half-million illegal immigrants.

The state will no longer require proof of citizenship for driver's licenses.

"We're changing our policy with respect to getting more people out of shadows and into the system so people don't hide they're here," Spitzer said.

He said the current restrictions on non-citizens have filled the roads with unlicensed drivers five times more likely to get into accidents.

But the also called it a matter of justice.

"As long as I'm governor we won't pretend they don't exist, cut them off from society," Spitzer said.

But the action triggered a bitter response from some 9/11 family members, who said the governor would be providing identification for potential terrorists.

Homer, I don't necessarily disagree with you. On paper it sounds unbelievable granting illegal aliens a driver's license.

However, don't you think Governor Spitzer has a point? Isn't it better having these people, who are going to be driving anyway, out of the shadows? Don't you think the number of accidents will be reduced?

As for the 9/11 families response, I certainly understand what they mean, although I highly doubt they're 100 per cent correct. I mean, weren't the 9/11 terrorists in the country legally?

I don't know, I'm conflicted. I think you're absolutely obsessed with the illegal immigration issue, but when all is said and done I still agree with you that it is dangerous for countries to have borders as porous as yours.

Well how would you feel if you were me?

I am a citizen,born and raised in New Jersey,and in order to renew or get a drivers license we have to supply several forms of valid ID.

They have a point system,and each document carries a certain # of points.
They must add up to 6 points...so it is necessary,usually, to have to present 3 forms of ID.
Say,my birth certificate,my Social Security card,and a bank statement or utility bill (recent) with my name and address.

But in California,all you have to do is walk in and apply...no proof required,so I have been told.

Now in NY one can walk in,show foeign papers and walk out with a license. Probably even admit there are illegal aliens and STILL get one.

Where is the Homeland Security in California,or NY?

THE LICENSE CAN THEN BE USED TO GET CREDIT CARDS TO FINACE TERROR ATTACKS,TO CASH CHECKS TO FINANCE TERROR ATTACKS.

A drivers license from any state is all you need to prove who you are in most cases.

If you are illegal,noone will suspect it if you can present a valid drivers license as ID.

My wife went to renew her license last month (she was born here too) and they would not accept our marriage certificate as ID because it was from the church.

She had to get one from the county with a seal on it...yet this smacked ass governor is all but handing them out on the street corner!

WHY NOT JUST THROW UP OUR HANDS AND COME OUT AND SAY..show me your ak-47 and pick up your valid drivers license today!
