Well, I bought the DVD today and wow. What a great movie. Violent. Definitely not a children's movie as you would think. But great.
This was not a film I would let any child view. Putting aside the horrendous violence, there was really scary stuff in this one. I don't mean like "Holy cow, that was scarrrry!" I mean that the issues were very adult and unsavory. The villian in the story was a really evil man. And I don't mean Lord of the Rings evil. He was a very real sort of evil. Almost Hitleresque in nature.
The story dealt with very adult themes about blindly following along and when you should do what you're told and when you shouldn't. It dealt with having to choose between what is easy and what is right. It was a moral tale, more like a fable than a fairy tale.
I highly recommend you see it, just don't let any children. _________________

It's funny how so many people thought that film was for children. I remember when it was in theaters I kept hearing how people mistook it for a children's film. I was like, "hello??" the film is rated "R" for Pete's sake. I don't know too many children's films with an R-rating. Sometimes I really wonder where people's common sense is. Perhaps nobody even pays attention to ratings anymore but they are there for a reason.
Anyway, I can't wait to see that film. It's one of many on my "must see" list.
I recently watched "Babel" and thought it was very good. It's has an intertwining story line that centers around one event and is quite compelling. I was particularly moved by the story involving the young, Japanese girl. I just felt so bad for her--you’ll know what I mean if you see, or have seen the film.
Another good one I watched recently was “The Good Sheppard” w/ Matt Damon.

I own all 3. And they were all great. But you are right about the rating system. I don't personally pay attention to them. I see about 1 movie per year in theater so I never even look at them. I always buy the DVD. I checked the rating on Pan half-way through the movie. I was thinking to myself, "this can't be a children's movie"! Sure enough it was rated "R". I felt like such a dolt. But it did, on it's face, appear to look like a children's film. Which is why I made sure to give the warning.
It was really great though. Some very good life lessons.
Babel was wonderful. I was particularly drawn to the story about the nanny. I was heart-broken for her. It's because of that story, I can't bring myself to watch the movie again. She was a marvelous actress. Hers was the best performance in my opinion. Which is why I can't watch it again.
I did like The Good Shepherd. Though I felt the only likable character in the whole film was the college girlfriend. Everyone else just seemed dishonest and despicable to me.
Good choices though. _________________
