I know that I should have put this on the Stockade thread, but I needed everyone's opinion so I wanted to make sure it was read.

Now that Ted Steven's is being investigated by the FBI, I have been chilling the "proverbial champagne" in hopes that some semblance of justice will finally be served in the name of the American people. Unfortunately, I have had certain misgivings that have been festering for some time now. Perhaps I am just too paranoid. I tend to read into situations where sometimes there is nothing to read into. I know that I over-analyze things, but there is something about this business that just doesn't make sense to me.

First, why did the amendment to divert funds from Stevens' "Alaskan Bridge" to the Katrina reconstruction budget get voted down 82 to 15? Remember, he threw a tantrum on the senate floor and threatened to quit the body if the amendment passed. And then all of the sudden, it fails catastrophically by 67 votes. Why? Ted Stevens behaved like a selfish bastard and the senate looked foolish and incompetent for capitulating to him. In the face of the Katrina disaster scandals and intense media scrutiny, why would senate members risk their public images for one man over a bridge? This is when I began to suspect that something wasn't right.

Second, why hasn't the Democratic party gone after him? The information and the paper trail has been there for years. The Dems have been scraping the barrel looking for criminal behaviors from Republicans. They will do anything to embarrass conservatives these days. Now along comes Ted Stevens who has committed enough criminal acts to warrant a prison term that would make Ted Bundy blush and yet they won't go anywhere near him. They won't even comment on his legal problems. Why? I mean there is blood in the water. No, let me re-phrase that. There is blood and a wounded carcass in the water. And the sharks are nowhere to be found. I don't understand this.

What the hell is going on? This doesn't make any sense. Unless.............

He has something on some very powerful people in BOTH parties. This is what scares the living shit out of me. Because if that is the case, this dirtbag will never spend a day in jail. He will get away with it.

So tell me if I am being paranoid. Tell me if you have another theory about why these events went down the way they did.

Being in politics for as long as Stevens tends to build enormous power.

If you intend to take a shot at him,you better not miss!

I am sure he made friends and conducted business with people of both parties.

Many demanded that he be made to step down from two powerful, important committees until this is cleared up.

But he did not,and both the Majority and Minority leaders have refused to ask him to do so,or to remove him.

Christ, is there any politician left who is not a crook? Let's send everyone in Washington home and start over.

I don't really think there is Shadow. None of them represent us anymore. I'm not sure that they ever did. Murtha pulled the same crap as Stevens involving, what amounted to, a million dollar payoff. The whole congressional body is corrupt. That's why I say we should get them all.

This thing with Stevens really has me concerned. Seriously, why hasn't anyone in the senate done anything? I'm telling you, he has got some very powerful people under his thumb. Something is very wrong.

For some odd reason there is a bi-partisan effort to keep this man on the two committees.

On cable I saw members of both parties saying that he has not been charged with anything ,so he is innocent until proven guilty.

One would expect that from his own party, but in the past the opposition party has always sreamed for those under investigation,to be removed from committee posts until the investigation is completed.

Only thing I can say is this guy must have the goods on both leaders and several members of each party...I think they are afraid of his power and what he could do to them in the future.

House erupts in chaos

In a massive flare-up of partisan tensions, Republicans walked out on a House vote late Thursday night to protest what they believed to be Democratic maneuvers to reverse an unfavorable outcome for them.

The flap represents a complete breakdown in parliamentary procedure and an unprecedented low for the sometimes bitterly divided chamber.

The rancor erupted shortly before 11 p.m. as Rep. Michael R. McNulty (D-N.Y.) gaveled close the vote on a standard procedural measure with the outcome still in doubt.

Details remain fuzzy, but numerous Republicans argued afterward that they had secured a 215-213 win on their motion to bar undocumented immigrants from receiving any federal funds apportioned in the agricultural spending bill for employment or rental assistance. Democrats, however, argued the measure was deadlocked at 214-214 and failed, members and aides on both sides of the aisle said afterward.

One GOP aide saw McNulty gavel the vote to a close after receiving a signal from his leaders – but before reading the official tally. And votes continued to shift even after he closed the roll call - a strange development in itself.

Whatever the final tally, acrimony quickly exploded between lawmakers on either side of the aisle as Democratic leaders tried to plot a solution, while parliamentarians on either side argued over protocol.

Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) eventually offered a motion to reconsider, according to floor staff on either side, ostensibly giving members a chance to recast their votes. But the maneuver sparked a chorus of angry protests from the Republicans, yelling “shame” on Democrats, while they returned fire with angry volleys of their own.

When Democrats finally moved to consider the spending bill as the last vote of the night, furious Republicans left the chamber en masse to protest the maneuver. The House eventually recessed at 11:18 p.m. But Republicans quickly discovered that there was no longer any record of the controversial vote and immediately charged Democrats with erasing the bad result.

“Obviously, the Democrats don’t want to stand up against illegal immigration – so much so that they’re willing to cheat in order to win a vote,” Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) said in an e-mail. “They’re desperate – and it shows.”

The official House website did not show a record of the vote as of 1 a.m. Friday.

It's the only thing that makes sense. Especially after that whole Alaskan bridge mess. I mean seriously, almost the entire senate voted down the amendment despite enormous public scrutiny and derision over it? What was worth taking a political risk like that? And now that there is blood in the water during a time when the Dems desperately need a sacrificial Republican lamb, they won't go anywhere near him. I agree with you, I think he does have the goods on several people.

I have a bad feeling that this guy may never see a day in jail. I'm telling you Homer............my money is on "no jail" or "Stevens has some fatal episode" like a heart attack. And who would question it, he's like 83. He is either going to come out of this scott-free or they are going to "retire" him.
